Personally, I consider myself very fortunate to live in a country with the most options available to the masses. However, I am also fortunate enough to have a brain (stimulated by great professors and peers) not to ignore customary government exploitation, often kept intact by tradition of the normative. What if I was born in China, where the extent of internet access is limited only to government supplied sites, in order not to disrupt the prescribed Chinese culture. Poster clearly defines, “The technical characteristics of the information superhighway and virtual reality are clear enough to call attention to their potential for new cultural formations” (540). Cyberspace fills in the space between the black and white lines, coloring the neutral areas of gray. It appears that the Chinese Government, just like many other forms of government is attempting to control the identity of the people. For instance, monopolies are suppose to be illegal to all Americans except for the government. The American Government monopolizes the electric, water, fuel, gas, telephone, and broadcasting companies (to name a few), constructing a disadvantageous balance in the economic system. Now they are desperate to “set new policies to govern and regulate public interest” concerning internet usage.
The political attempt of globally restricting the interactivity of the internet is obviously to block the affects and effects of, “broad massive change in communications systems” (533). This control of culture serves a higher purpose over humanity, money and power. Human beings on this earth are global citizens of the world. However, it is as if we live on different planets. Is it pure coincedence that humans who migrate from other countries to America are labeled, “aliens”? Whenever I am glutton for punishment and decide to watch a political debate or forum; now as a Postmodern thinker I pay particular attention to the language the politicians use. Lately, I have noticed they refer to the masses as “people” versus “humans”. It’s easier for politicians to address humanity as a whole, rather than consider the individual human life they affect with their decisions. Furthermore, using the word “people” to describe their fellow citizens sets them apart from the masses, as if above humanity. It is up to the "people" to insist on being viewed as anomalous human beings whom have endless options to live our lives, as long as we do not hurt our fellow earthlings. That includes the politicians that forget they are apart of humanity, maybe they are the real aliens.
