Captain’s Blog Stardate Very Late
Happy Halloween. Like many things, Halloween has taken on quite the postmodern attitude about a lot of stuff. I will riff on a few of these:
Costumes. It seems as though every year there are the “in” costumes that you see people wearing. Everybody wants to have the new idea, yet everybody somehow ends up mostly the same. Popular television shows and movies are always represented in great numbers. I think Jenkins probably finds the amount of Star Wars inspired costumes amusing. While the new characters are prominent, I am amazed by the amount of people who still dress up like Princess Leah and Hans Solo. This year my best friend sent me an e-mail with dogs dressed like various Star Wars characters. The pug as Yoda was the best.
Candy is another postmodern thing about Halloween. Its so capitalist, all these kids running around trying to get the “good” candy, beating each other to the punch and avoiding certain poor neighborhoods where candy corns are the staple treat choice. I remember when you were warned not to take apples because they might have razor blades in them. Now just try and give a kid an apple and see what happens.
Disney World. Ever since Universal and Busch Gardens started their special Halloween events Halloween Horror Nights and Spooktacular, you know the people at Disney have been wracking their little mouse brains to come up with something that would sell tickets. Their answer? Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Thingamobob. That’s it Mickey, go after the younger kids, because what would a holiday about being scared and eating sweets be without a theme park experience.
