Mony- Pre -class Bourdieu.
Journalists have been designated to record reality. We rely on these chosen ones to present the news. Without TV journalists, the majority of Americans/people would have no window to view events. Newspapers just don’t give us enough “pictures”. It is then we realize that the power is in the hands of the journalist to give us the correct information. They become our nightly friend, one who we invite into our homes and discuss the daily happenings of the world. How many of us don’t think fondly about Ted Koppel, Dan Rather, or the late Peter Jennings. I used to get so excited when I was young because Bob Opsel would always wave to me in the Winter Park Christmas Parade. I really trusted these journalists. Now, I must turn away from their trusted smiles.
Bourdieu’s article shows that they are no friend. Even though they seem friendly and have great hair, they are just human filters that produce only profit producing news. They are censors by the process of selecting only certain issues for broadcasting. And come on, who likes a censor? Journalists are responsible for a mass web of cultural production: “ In other words, this journalistic field, which is more and more dominated by the market model, imposes its pressures more and more on other fields” (Bourdieu 335) Thanks Po-Mo once again, now I have lost my journalist friends.
