TYG 8/29 -- a short story
Postmodern culture and the philosophy thereof that we've been exploring in class so far leaves me feeling much as does the effective presentation of Hemingway's short story from class. The pieces of the past seem broken, shattered; all hope is gone; everything that was good and beautiful in history has been reduced to rubble, why not just end it all; after all, God is dead, right? What's the purpose of life? To just perpetuate what's been going on for more endless centuries until the sun goes dark? To just create more and more stupid people clogging the sidewalks and streets of (your city's name here) putting more and more filth into the ecosystem?
Postmodern architecture, on the other hand, seems hopeful and promising (though certainly bizzare in some instances) -- many interesting and beautiful bits of the past are combined with new ideas and technologies to create a mosaic that’s someone's idea of beauty. Not just a nostalgic, luddite’s march in the wrong direction, but a meandering stroll or a forced march forward into whatever the future holds. Maybe people who build bombs support the "why bother" point of view, but anyone who plans and builds something beyond the most meager of shelters, certainly anyone who creates the myriad structures we viewed in class, must have some positive thoughts for the future.
