Mony-Baldwin Park.
On Saturday night I had a small gathering of friends over for some board games. At some point I asked them what there defintion of postmodernism was. This question sparked an hour's worth of conversation and some hot debate. Most of us agreed that the concept of postmodernism does not have a simple defintion, but that basically it was the study of why people have more distractions than ever, yet are still bored. We then decided to read Jameson's "nostalgia made" theory.
After contemplating Jameson's idea of architectural designs that take aspects of the past and combine them with a modern look, we all said that Baldwin Park, Victoria Park,Avalon Park, Waterford Lakes and Celebration came to mind. These develpoments may not be that "overstimulating" in buliding design, but they seem to be completly "overstmulating" in layout design and ideology. The developers are making millions on promoting the "ideal" 1950's type neighborhood. But this time around the minorities, gays, and single parent households are allowed to purchase land amongst the treeless landscapes. It is crazy to think that these so-called "established" towns, can become "established" in less than 5 years.
The draw of nostalgia and the All -American life sells. Too bad they don't make the houses like they used to in the 1950's though, because if a severe hurricane was to come through Central Florida, these developments would be the first to go, taking the soccer moms and mini-vans with them.
